The Good Food Tour

by Gay Cook

The Good Food Tour is a new, deliciously, exciting walking, adventure company. It takes place in the charming town of Almonte.  The tours are off and running from now throughout the summer each weekend up until October 29th. The town of Almonte is an easy 30-minute drive, due west from Ottawa’s west end. The tours take place and offer different culinary locations throughout the town with a chance to sample their delicious treats. Another adventure is to watch the attractive and busy Mississippi River that runs through the centre of the town to make the town so picturesque.

The tours are created by resident Cathy Reside offering the three hour walking tours that will take people at different food locations  where one can taste, test and learn about the unique food items and sights of Almonte.

Cathy is passionate about her town and the sense of community and the day-to-day artistic life it brings. It’s a town with many artists. A sample of the “foody”locations to visit include;

Equator Coffee Roasters allows you to taste delicious organic coffee and learn about the importance of fair trade coffee. Baker Bob’s offers you to sample crisps and a deconstructed lemon tart. Jessica’s Syrian Food made by a newly arrived Syrian chef offers many dishes including hummus, falafel and chicken kebabs. At the Mill Street Crepe Company you are invited to sample their delicious Croque-Monsieur Crepe. The ingredients for this delicious dish are smoked ham, oven roasted tomato, Swiss cheese and house made apple honey mustard and flavoured with local maple syrup with the garnish of olive oil, chives and pea shoots. The visit to the Crooked Mile Microbrewery is where you will sample a British style craft beer. You will not be able to resist the Hummingbird Chocolates that are hand made.

Almonte is also historically famous as it’s the birthplace of the renowned sport of basketball that was invented 100 years ago by a local resident James Naismith. To learn more visit via the internet or visit the Naismith Museum and Hall of Fame that recently moved in the new location at the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area .
