Walter Faraday — obituary

Faraday, Walter Robert

May 16, 1935 – June 30, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Robert Faraday, born in Quebec City on May 16, 1935.

Walter shared an extraordinary 73 years of marriage with the love of his life, Merle Faraday (née Chernoff). Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, family, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Walter began his career as a travelling salesman throughout the Ottawa Valley and Northern Ontario. As the company he worked for grew into R.J. Reynolds Nabisco, his career took him across Canada. Walter and Merle later purchased and operated the beloved Almonte landmark J.P. Rooney’s, a popular store and gathering place where they became well known in the community.

Through his dedication and hard work, Walter was able to retire at the young age of 52. Retirement was exactly as Walter hoped it would be; spent outdoors working tirelessly on the property that he and Merle loved in the Lanark Highlands. Whether there was wood to split, a project to tackle, or land to care for, Walter was happiest with his hands busy and surrounded by nature.

A longtime member of the Almonte community, Walter proudly served as a volunteer firefighter in Middleville and was an active member of the local church. He believed in helping others and quietly gave back to his community throughout his life.

Walter was predeceased by his beloved son, Perry, and by two of his closest lifelong friends, Bob Robinson and Brian Mulvihill, with whom he shared countless adventures, a little mischief, and many cherished memories.

He leaves behind his devoted wife Merle, and the many “workers” he lovingly recruited over the years, including his son Stephen (Michelle), his brother and friend Loran (June) and his grandchildren Krista (Cassie and Cole), Brian (Tasha), Walter, Emily (Callum and Noelle), Jacob (Kolby), Derek, Moira, and Kieran. His family was his greatest source of pride and nothing brought him more joy than watching each generation grow.

Walter will be remembered for his steady presence, remarkable work ethic, quiet kindness, and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled and the countless memories he created.

His family will forever treasure the simple moments that became lifelong traditions: summer afternoons enjoying ice cream at Balderson, hot dog roasts in the bush, and time spent together on the Lanark property that meant so much to him. Those moments of laughter, storytelling, hard work, and togetherness remain among his greatest gifts to those who loved him.

Walter lived a life well lived—one defined by dedication, humility, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
