Mississippi Mills Chili Days Shuffleboard Tournament on Feb. 17, 2026
The Almonte Arena was the site of the annual all-day Chili Days Shuffleboard Tournament on Tuesday, February 17. Almonte used to have a full week of winter fun activities but in the last decades these have fallen off so this is the remaining one.
Forty seniors began play at 9 am, each team of two chosen at random, playing four games and those with the highest scores playing off until the winning team achieved the honour of having their names engraved on the trophy offered by Mississippi Mills. It is quite sobering to see how many of the former winners are no longer with us since the trophy goes back to 1989.
Volunteers from the group served as referees and scorekeepers.
Mississippi Mills provided coffee and timbits in the morning and the highlight of the day was a luncheon catered by Leatherworks who always provide a great meal.
This year there were many last-minute changes with people dropping out due to illness so when we were short 3 the day before, Susan Law and Chris Latham from the town joined convener Marilyn Snedden to fill the spaces. The arena staff also assist in setting up the extra carpet but don’t usually fill in as well so many thanks to them.
With all the changes, a very positive innovation was Karl Skjaveland’s offer to produce a computer-generated schedule which made changing the names much easier than the convener entering them about 10 times. He brought his laptop and after entering the scores of the games was able to calculate who won a place in the playoffs in less than 10 minutes! It amazed most of us!
Pool winners were: Elaine Henry & Heather Sulpher; Connie Bielby & Brian Slocum; Ed Bowden & Jean Smith and Edgar Elliot and Alison Ayotte. The trophy winners were Connie Bielby and Brian Slocum.
