Taking Charge of Your Health – 3 Part Webinar Series

Remember when you felt like you knew how to navigate the healthcare system?

You had a family doctor. You made an appointment. If you needed additional care, you were referred to someone else. You may not have understood every part of the system, but for the most part, you knew where to start.

Today, healthcare can feel very different.

There are new services, new ways to access care, different healthcare providers and more information available than ever before. Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing that you need help — it’s knowing where to begin, what questions to ask and how to find your way through the system.

If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re certainly not alone.

And that’s exactly why Bridging Generations – Age Friendly Pakenham created the Taking Charge of Your Health webinar series.

A little knowledge can make a big difference

Taking Charge of Your Health isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about giving people practical information and tools that can help them become more informed and confident participants in their own healthcare — whether they’re navigating the system for themselves or helping someone they care about.

The free three-part webinar series begins in September and follows a natural progression from learning how to advocate for yourself, to becoming a more active partner in your care, to better understanding how to navigate the healthcare system itself.

Healthcare Advocacy 101 – September 17 at 2:30 PM

How do you speak up for yourself — or someone you care about — when navigating healthcare?

The first webinar introduces the fundamentals of healthcare advocacy, with practical strategies for asking questions, communicating concerns, accessing services and helping to ensure your needs are understood.

Becoming an Engaged Partner in Your Care – October 15 at 2:30 PM

Being involved in your healthcare can begin long before you walk into an appointment.

This session explores practical ways to prepare for healthcare appointments, ask questions, understand your care options and communicate effectively with healthcare providers. The goal is to help people feel more comfortable taking an active role and working collaboratively with their healthcare team.

Navigating the Healthcare System – November 19 at 2:30 PM

Sometimes knowing where to turn is half the battle.

The final webinar takes a broader look at navigating healthcare and community resources — helping participants better understand available services, where to go for support and how to find their way through a healthcare system that can sometimes feel complicated.

Each webinar stands on its own, so participants are welcome to register for the topic that interests them most. Taken together, however, the three sessions provide a practical roadmap for becoming a more informed, confident and engaged participant in your healthcare.

An idea that started in our community

The Taking Charge of Your Health webinar series grew out of a five-week learning and community engagement program presented in November 2025 by Bridging Generations – Age Friendly Pakenham and Learning Again in Almonte.

The feedback from participants told us something important.

Although the original program had been developed with older adults in mind, participants saw value in making this kind of information available much more broadly — to younger adults, caregivers, family members and people who may be encountering parts of the healthcare system for the first time.

They also told us which topics they found particularly valuable. Understanding healthcare advocacy, becoming a more engaged partner in your own care and learning how to better navigate the healthcare system stood out.

We listened.

Those conversations became the foundation for this new three-part webinar series.

Join from home — or join your community

We also know that not everyone wants to participate in the same way.

All three webinars can be joined online from home, making the series available well beyond our immediate community.

For those who would rather participate alongside others, community viewing sessions will also be offered at the Almonte and Pakenham branches of the Mississippi Mills Public Library. Carebridge Community Support will offer community viewing opportunities at the Stan Mills Lounge on selected dates.

The webinars are free to attend, but registration is required.

The Taking Charge of Your Health Webinar Series is presented by Bridging Generations – Age Friendly Pakenham in partnership with the Lanark Community Alliance and the Lanark, Leeds & Grenville Ontario Health Team.

Because while none of us needs to understand every part of the healthcare system, knowing what questions to ask, where to turn and how to participate in our own care can help make the journey a little easier.
