In 1497, Savonarola, a Dominican priest, started what became known annually as the Bonfire of the Vanities during a time which would normally be reserved for the festival of Carnival. The phrase refers to the destruction of many valuable and irreplaceable works that Savonarola considered to be objectionable: those of Ovid, Dante and Boccaccio, for example. He was eventually excommunicated in 1497.
