  1. quiz15The Christmas pickle has become a bit of a tradition in the United States.  It was thought  to have originated in Germany but now it seems to have originated in the USA.  a pickle, or a decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden in a Christmas tree, and the finder receives a reward and good luck for the new year.  If the finder is a child, he/she will get an extra present from Santa.
  2. A pomander is a ball perforated for sweet smelling spices to make closets and drawers smell fragrant.  In a famous portrait of Queen Elizabeth I she is painted holding a pomander in her hand.  Nowadays pomanders are usually made of an apple or orange perforated with cloves.

Although a rope tow had been built in l931, 5 years later US railroad magnate Averill Harriman hired a young engineer named Jim Curran to adapt a mechanism he had devised for moving bananas by using the hook and cable on this contraption for a chair to lift skiers.  The town of Ketchum, Idaho, had the right height of hills and clear access to the railway.  This is where the lift came to life, in a place now called Sun Valley.
