This Ottawa native graduated from Queen’s University with a baccalaureate in History of Art and English then spent two years studying Interior Design at the University of Manitoba.  In 1999 after negotiating early retirement from a major international advertising agency in Toronto, she returned to Ottawa and has been developing her creativity through her artwork.  She has explored the mediums of soft pastel, watercolour, acrylic, mixed media, collage and hand-made paper and has found each discipline to have its own rewards and challenges.  She often incorporates her own drawings into her compositions.  Her bas–relief “Fashion Sense” series focusing on dresses constructed of nontraditional materials has evolved into free hanging sculptures of life-sized garments.  These series tap into numerous of Patricia’s passions such as fashion, sewing, problem solving, and tactile art.

She is an active member of the local art scene, participating in the Glebe and Strathcona Art in the Park festivals, Art on the Farm, the 2007 Ottawa Fine Art Festival and the 2009, ’10, ‘11and ’12 Ottawa Art Expos.  In the fall of 2009 she was one of 7 juried artists selected for the Friends of the Farm annual fundraising event.  She was also the runner-up for the Trailblazer award that recognized artistic innovation at the 2009 Ottawa Art Expo.  A member of the Ottawa Mixed Media Artists (OMMA), the Nepean Fine Arts League (NFAL) and the West Carleton Arts society (WCAS), she exhibits regularly through these associations at a variety of local venues and galleries throughout the year.  She was juried into the (disbanded in June 2012) Art Lending of Ottawa in 2005.  Her juried work was periodically seen in the Art Rental section of the Ottawa Art Gallery.  In addition Patricia has mounted eleven solo shows since 2003.

She was also one of the founding members of “the LOFT art studios” on Gladstone and regularly volunteers her time with all the various art associations with which she is associated.  She continues to hone her technical skills through workshops presented by local, national and international instructors.

Her work can be found in private collections in Ottawa, Toronto, Victoria, Halifax, San Jose (California) and Fayetteville, (Arkansas).

Patricia lives in Westboro and may be reached through her website: patriciamgordon-studios.ca.

 Artist’s Statement

I have had a life-long connection with nature and animals and these themes frequently emerge, often unbidden, in my representative and less abstract works.   My exploration into spiritual growth and the “oneness” of nature and the universe is the source of the balance and serenity that appears in many of my collages.  Besides natural and spiritual themes, my other creative influences include all areas of design (fashion, fabrics, home furnishings, interior and exterior spaces, and architecture).  I love the tactile aspects of making art and will frequently build texture into my work allowing the eye of the viewer to become an extension of the hands.

Regardless of subject matter, my work is about problem solving, solid design and composition.  A strong element of “personal content” in my work maintains its integrity and authenticity.
