Lanark birds on Facebook

by Brent Eades

Here’s something I’ve been remiss in not mentioning in the course of my birding posts in the Millstone: the fact that Lanark County has its very own birding group on Facebook.

The group was started by Jeff Mills a while back, and now boasts nearly 80 members. Membership is open to any Facebook member who wishes to join. More information here:

In a related vein, a flock of Common Goldeneyes has settled in along the Mississippi between Almonte and Appleton. A far northern bird, the Goldeneye will often migrate only as far south as it can find open water. For at least the last couple of years that has meant the Mississippi near sets of falls, where the water doesn’t freeze solid.

I took a few distant photos of the Goldeneyes at Appleton today. (Click photos for larger views.)
