Naismith Men’s Shed: Building community one local project at a time

Retirement. For many men, it’s painted as a golden age — mornings without alarms, long afternoons puttering in the garage, maybe a leisurely golf game or two. But for a lot of us, it isn’t quite the paradise we imagined. Suddenly, there’s all this time and no clear purpose. Friends are busy, family has their own lives, and days can stretch out long and quiet. Some men find themselves alone with nothing to do but think, or worse, dwell on losses and health worries.

That’s where the Naismith Men’s Shed in Mississippi Mills comes in. It’s not just a workshop or a place to tinker with wood and tools — it’s a lifeline, a place to belong, and a way to keep moving, learning, and laughing, all in good company. And at its heart is a simple motto: building community one local project at a time.

Founded eight years ago, the Naismith Men’s Shed now has about 60 members, ranging from retirees who just want to keep their hands busy, to men looking for a reason to get out of the house and meet some friends. The Shed takes its name with permission from James Naismith’s grandson — a nod to creativity, teamwork, and inventiveness. But the true spirit of the Shed isn’t in the name, it’s in what happens inside: men side by side, sharing skills, swapping stories, and quietly looking out for one another.

The Shed is part of a worldwide movement that began in Australia in the 1990s, where men started gathering in backyard workshops to escape loneliness, share experiences, and make something useful with their hands. Today, there are more than 3,500 Men’s Sheds in 17 countries, and in Canada, Men’s Sheds Canada — a registered charity formed in 2021 — supports new Sheds, strengthens existing ones, and champions men’s mental health.

At Naismith, there’s no rush, no pressure, no complicated rules. Members come when they can, work at their own pace, and choose the projects that interest them. For some, that means woodworking — carving, sanding, assembling. For others, it’s learning a new skill from a fellow Shredder. For everyone, it’s about companionship. There’s a kind of magic that happens when men are working side by side. Conversations flow easier, laughter comes naturally, and sometimes the most important work is just listening and sharing a story.

The Shed is as much about fun and friendship as it is about projects. There are regular breakfasts and lunches, games days where laughter echoes through the room, walking and hiking groups, bike outings, and excursions to places like the chainsaw museum. Members are always encouraged to bring new ideas — if a man has a hobby or a skill he wants to share, there’s a place for it. And while women aren’t members, their impact is felt. One friend laughed when she told me, “Joining the Shed did wonders for me — he’s no longer lost after retirement, following me around and expecting me to be his social convenor.” The Shed doesn’t just help men; it helps the people around them too.

Projects at the Shed are as varied as its members. Some build workbenches, others help with community gardens, and there’s always something practical happening that leaves the town a little better than they found it. Every plank of wood, every carefully assembled project, every small act of teamwork is part of the larger goal: strengthening bonds, keeping minds sharp, and building community one local project at a time.

Some might wonder why Men’s Sheds are male-only spaces. The answer is simple: men often open up more freely when they are working “shoulder to shoulder.” It’s easier to talk about challenges, health, or life transitions while focused on a project. The Shed is a place to be yourself without judgment, to ask for help, and to offer guidance in return. It’s a place to laugh, to teach, and to learn — and above all, to feel part of something bigger than oneself.

Over the years, the Naismith Men’s Shed has become a fixture in Mississippi Mills, a quiet but powerful force for community connection. It’s where retired hands are put to work, where skills are shared and passed down, and where men find a renewed sense of purpose. It’s also where friendships are formed, where laughter fills the room, and where each member leaves a little better than they arrived.

At the heart of it all is a simple truth: men need each other. We need a place to belong, a reason to show up, and a way to contribute. The Naismith Men’s Shed provides all that and more — a place where tools are wielded, stories are shared, and lives are quietly transformed.
