Ottawa River Power Corporation urges caution in dealing with door-to door energy retailers

by the Ottawa River Power Corporation

DoorWe encourage our customers to be cautious if you are approached to sign or renew an energy contract for your home or business.  Here are some tips, as outlined by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) which regulates the industry:

  • Always ensure you see the salesperon’s ID badge, and receive a business card
  • Do not share your personal information (ie. your bills), unless you are certain you wish to sign a contract
  • Read over the contract with care, as well as the disclosure statement, and the price comparison provided by the salesperson
  • The Ontario Energy Board does not solicit door-to-door

You have choices when buying the energy portion of your electrical energy needs. Ottawa River Power Corporation does not sell electricity but simply delivers the electricity to your home.  Therefore ORPC will never come to your door to sell this to you.  If you do not purchase your power from a retailer, your power is provided under the Regulated Price Plan set by the Ontario Energy Board.  To understand the options before you sign a contract follow this link for more information: Consumer Protection.

Also, the Ministry of Consumer Services has developed tips for consumers to deal with unsolicited sales agents who knock on their door (including information about water heater rentals), please visit:www.sse.gov.on.ca/mcs/en/Pages/Door_to_Door_Sales.aspx
