With its scenic river, historic architecture and funky high street boutiques, Almonte is always worth a visit. But this quaint cafe, which current owner Nathaly Houston used to visit with her grandparents, serves up a hearty afternoon tea in a room with an exposed stone wall, a display of commemorative plates, and shelves of milk glass.
There’s fresh fruit and scones (with lemon curd) fresh from the oven.
The sandwiches change daily, and still bear their crusts because, Houston says, she believes in full value.
The business is famous for its desserts, and you’ll get a selection of whatever is fresh that day; pray it includes her brownies. Tea is orange pekoe. And the floral centrepiece? You get to take it home.
Hours: Monday to Saturday, 2 to 4 p.m. for tea.

Second serving: Home-grown success stories include Hummingbird Chocolate (9 Houston Dr.) and Equator Coffee Roasters (451 Ottawa St.), whose artisan products can be bought right at the source. You won’t want it after tea, of course. But later you’ll be glad you stopped.
