The federal government appears to be reentering the environmental protection field that it largely abandoned under the Harper government. A number of landowners in Mississippi Mills have received the letter below. The federal government is asking for input on the protection strategies for the Rapids Club Tail Dragon Fly, an endangered species which survives along the Mississippi River. Most of Almonte would be considered habitat, although the most vital area is along the shores of the Mississippi River and the river itself. If you have comments or concerns, you may contact the government here. Comments must be in by March 29, 2016. The identified threats to the Rapids Clubtail are listed on the fourth page below. The Ontario Government website notes that
- adult Rapids clubtails only live for three to four weeks, between early June and mid-July
- larvae bury themselves under a fine layer of sediment and ‘breathe’ through the exposed tip of their abdomen.
