Neil Carleton – Explore Fossils at the Corridor Gallery

Almonte Branch library

June 23 – August 1

The Corridor Gallery at the Almonte branch of the Mississippi Mills Public Library is excited to present a collaborative show between artist Neil Carleton and Ernesto Delgado. Both are keen fossil hunters, and Ernesto represents the Eastern Ontario Natural History Society (EONS).

The exhibition Explore Fossils is in two parts: a large collection of fossils found in the Ottawa Valley, and Neil’s artwork along with contributions from young library patrons. The work is geologically-inspired, and the subject is explored through collage, mixed-media and painting – Neil is self-described as enthusiastically experimental!  Neil is retired from careers in the museum and education fields, and curious about all things nature.  The focus of his creativity ranges from the complex wonder of water reflected light to the structural patterns of lunar landscapes.  You’ll also find him looking for and hanging out with the shady characters of forest succession.  Known on-air around the world as VE3NCE, he was inducted into the Canadian Amateur Radio Hall of Fame.  During his classroom career as a grades 4-5-6 teacher, Mr. C received a Teaching Innovation Award.  Neil is a founding member of the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists.  In progress at his studio are take-home kits of rocks / minerals / fossils that he’s preparing for families.

The show also includes an ongoing fossil hunt in the library with an opportunity to win a prize. One of the specimens in the display cases is covered in fossils – identify and count as many as you can, enter your result on a ballot and be eligible for the prize (a book on fossils) when the show closes August 1.
