Reader seeks critter ID

While cutting back my flower garden I came upon a large, ugly worm-type insect. It was buried in the mulch and wriggly around. I left it for a while and shortly after it was climbing a small tree.

Upon checking the internet I found what I believe it is (photo attached). It looks like a hornworm caterpillar that defoliates trees and is a nuisance in vineyards. It had the consistency of a rubber eraser, was about 2 inches long, really thick and extremely feisty.

After all of the leaf munching that occurred this summer, I tossed it down the toilet. Perhaps it will defoliate my septic tank! If any readers know it is something else please advise.
