A new Millstone for the new year

Readers of the web version of The Millstone will notice some changes to the design and layout of the paper today. These are partly in response to comments from readers over the past year.

We heard that articles tended to ‘disappear’ from the front page too quickly at times, and could then be hard to find; and that navigating through the menu on a smartphone could be awkward. The changes we’re launching today address these and other issues.

Sections on the front page now show more current and past articles than before. Then, once you click through to an article, you’ll see links at the bottom to ‘Related Articles’.

The front page and main menu also offer new ways of browsing articles:

Main menu

Moving the cursor over items in the main menu will display a ‘mega-menu’ showing the latest articles in that section.

Browse within sections

Each section on the front page displays small arrows at the bottom. Clicking on these lets you move back and forth within the section.

Browse sub-sections

Where applicable you can click through sub-sections of a given section.

Mobile menu

The main menu on smartphones is easier to use. Click on a title (left) to go direct to a section, or on a down arrow (right) to see a sub-menu.

We also expect to have new contributors to the Millstone in the coming weeks, and we remind you that we’re always in the lookout for news tips and article and photo submissions. We look forward to covering the news that matters to Missisippi Mills in 2016.
