Train whistle sounds through Almonte and Carleton Place once again

by Edith Cody-Rice

Almonte and Carleton Place residents were surprised to hear the plaintive sound of a train whistle this morning as an engine moved slowly through town. Once a regular feature of Almonte life, the trains stopped going through both communities some time ago and people have been using the train tracks as an informal pedestrian trail. Here's hoping there was no one on the bridge over the Mississippi at Almonte when the train made its unexpected arrival.
