The Mississippi Mills fire department stations 1 and 2 responded to a structure fire on Maude Street in Almonte at approximately 2:20 am this morning.

The working smoke alarm woke up the residents and they immediately exited the house and called 911. The crew quickly extinguished the fire, which was contained to the basement. The cause is still under investigation but is not suspicious. The residents were sent to hospital as a precaution but there were no injuries.

The fire chief would like to remind all residents to test their smoke alarms at least once a month.
