Mississippi Mills is a Green Energy town

Shaunby Mayor Shaun McLaughlin

A friend asked me an intriguing question the other week: is the amount of green energy generated in Mississippi Mills equal or near to the amount of electricity we use?

There are three hydro generation plants on the river, with a combined capacity of 6.26 megawatts (MW) and two solar farms in the country, each rated at 10 MW.

I posed the question to Scott Newton, the bright fellow that runs our big power plant in Almonte. He wrote that, factoring in the limits of solar (sun hours) and hydro (water flow), and the standard conversion efficiencies, the 26.26 MW generated within our borders provide enough power for between 5,500 and 6,500 homes. Mississippi Mills has just over 5,500 residences.

We are a green-energy town.
