Open letter to the Mayor and Councillors re the motion to rescind the Heritage moratorium

Proposed downtown heritage assessment studyHello Mr. Mayor and Town Councillors

This is to let you know that I disagree with Councillor John Edwards’ motion to try, yet again, to rescind the Heritage Conservation District (HCD) moratorium bylaw because sixteen persons are upset. Although I do not know who these sixteen people are or if these sixteen persons actually live in the proposed HCD, or even if they own properties within the proposed HCD, I can only guess who they are by who attended the last couple of Council meetings to show support for Councillor Edwards’ last attempts to rescind the HCD moratorium bylaw. It is my view that these sixteen people are not representative of the views of the majority of the property owners within the proposed HCD or representative of the views of the majority of Almonte residents. I do know that the HCD and the HCD Moratorium Bylaw 14-86 is for the benefit of all Almontonians and Mississippi Millers.

Since 2004 I along with my husband are residential property owners within the proposed HCD. In 2004 I was reluctant to buy a home in this community because it was a town that was dying. In 2008 we moved into this home and my reluctance remained, even though we made and continue to make significant investments in this home (respecting the home’s heritage in our updating and redecorating of its interior and exterior). It was only in 2011 that I saw a renewed energy and commitment in this community for a future and it captured my attention. I have since invested my time in learning about this community and its heritage, and have now become an engaged citizen.

I do support the HCD Moratorium Bylaw 14-86 that was put in place. It is my view that the HCD is the right direction for this town and any rescinding of the Moratorium Bylaw will sabotage our community’s future.

I do not support rescinding the HCD (Heritage Conservation District) Moratorium Bylaw 14-86. I ask Councillor Edwards to withdraw his motion to rescind this bylaw. In the event that Councillor Edwards does not withdraw his motion, I ask all other Councillors on Town Council to defeat Councillor Edwards’ motion. I will be in attendance and will be encouraging others who support the HCD (Heritage Conservation District) Moratorium Bylaw 14-86 to attend as well.

Sincerely

Mary Rozenberg

Engaged Almonte Citizen
