Physiotherapists are key members of the AGH health care team

May is National Physiotherapy Month, providing an opportunity to recognize and thank the Physiotherapists who provide caring treatment and support. The Almonte General Hospital (AGH) has eight Physiotherapists, led by Physiotherapy Manager Nina Mukerjee.

Physiotherapists in Canada are required to obtain an entry-level Master’s degree, studying subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology and behavioural science. In Ontario, they must register and maintain good professional standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

They are regulated health professionals, whose practice is governed by the Regulated Health Professionals Act and the Physiotherapy Act.

According to the Ontario Physiotherapy Act, "The practice of physiotherapy is the assessment of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and cardio respiratory systems, the diagnosis of diseases or disorders associated with physical dysfunction, injury or pain and the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention or relief of physical dysfunction, injury or pain to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment function and promote mobility."

At AGH, the Physiotherapists’ practice includes: providing exercises for patients in the Medical/Surgical Unit who have come home to Almonte to recover from joint replacement surgery; helping residents in the Rosamond Unit and Fairview Manor maintain or improve their ability to walk or dress themselves; working with patients in the Hospital and Day Hospital to recover mobility after a stroke or a fall; and coaching and supporting outpatients who come to the Physiotherapy Department following an accident, illness or surgery. In short, Physiotherapists work across the organization with people at all ages and stages of life, to help them restore, maintain and maximize their strength, their movement and the quality of their daily lives.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated, compassionate and highly professional team of Physiotherapists serving the patients and residents at AGH and Fairview Manor.

Junior Volunteer Program

Applications from interested students who would like to volunteer at the Hospital and Fairview Manor this summer are still being accepted. The Junior Volunteer Program allows students to complete 40 hours of volunteering in a one-week block, while learning about many aspects of health care in a supported environment. Returning students are also welcome. For more information, please contact Anne McRae or Meredith Nichols at 613-256-2514, extension 2226.
