I was shocked by the behavior of our Mayor at the Mississippi Mills Council Meeting on the evening of Tuesday, June 28th when the Mayor raised his hand as if to strike a resident of Mississippi Mills who was sitting in the viewing gallery. The Mayor’s physical threat was followed by verbal profanities issued at a gentleman who was merely demonstrating his democratic rights to express his view. It was childish for our Mayor to delay the start of the meeting when clearly the members of Council and the public were not being disruptive.
Residents of Mississippi Mills should not be subjected to physical threats and verbal abuse by our civic leaders. The Mayor clearly suffers from anger management issues and should step down. It’s important that residents of Mississippi Mills be encouraged to express their view at Council Meetings and not feel intimidated or fear for their physical wellbeing. We expect our Mayor to remain calm and exercise control in stressful circumstances, regardless of the cause or who is right or wrong.
Threatening residents with physical threats and verbal abuse is not not the type of behavior that we should expect from our civic leaders.
Sincerely,
Paul Haliburton
