Reader responds to Mayor on Don Maynard Park

Sir,

Many residents of Almonte and members of the media will be reading this email at the time you receive it.

I have in my possession a copy of the Town of Almonte Subdivision Agreement dated May 1984, revised June 1984, wherein Mr. Frank Kremarik the Owner Developer of Phases I and II of the Gale Subdivision was required by the Town of Almonte and in accordance with the Planning Act, Section 50 (6) to set aside land and develop at his own expense, the park currently known as Don Maynard Park.

Copies of this document are being widely circulated to the residents of the Gale Subdivision as we speak.

A deed on file at the Registry Office clearly shows that the land set aside for this park was transferred by Mr. Kremarik to the Town of Almonte for one dollar ($1.00).

In other words, the Town of Almonte did not contribute a single penny to the development of Don Maynard Park and from what I can determine has contributed very little since then towards its maintenance. Currently, much of the maintenance is being provided by volunteers and local residents.

Back in 1984, Mr. Kremarik would have had little choice except to pass the costs of developing Don Maynard Park on to the residents of the Gale Subdivision when they purchased their homes. This is significant as it means that the residents of the Gale Subdivision paid for the costs of developing Don Maynard Park and as mentioned above have continued to contribute to its maintenance.

I have read your response to the online petition and do not believe that it will placate many of the residents of the Town of Almonte. The recent actions of you and your council have left residents of this Town upset. You and your council are driving a wedge right through the heart of this Town. In fact, you are driving some residents in the complete opposite direction in which you hope to take us. The residents of the Gale Subdivision are now aware of who paid for Don Maynard Park and they will be become even more discontented on learning of this fact. Many of them will not forget your actions at election time. Rest assured, they have long memories.
