As part of the Ubuntu Choir Network (Ubuntu loosely translates as ‘interconnectedness’ in the Buntu languages of South African), Rhythm & Song! embraces the following beliefs:
- singing is an essential human birthright and a powerful source of energy and connection.
- singing together is a potent tool for building community
- singing in harmony teaches us to celebrate diversity, and to practice deep listening
This fall there were upwards of ninety singers between two weekly groups. I think this is a direct result of people needing to connect, in person, with others, in positive ways. We need to be able to gather, nurture kindness, share some laughs, and tend to our immediate community. The quotes below have come from singers over the years and reinforce the health and social benefits of singing in groups.
“I was feeling so ‘blah’ before our session but I left feeling so ‘up’!”
“My doctor says my breathing has improved.”
“My speaking voice is stronger.”
“I never thought I could sing with others, but now I even sing on my own!”
“I’ve met so many amazing people through Rhythm & Song!.”
“I recently moved to Almonte. I’ve been looking for a way to connect with the community and found it.”
“I went to New Zealand and ended up singing that Maori song we learned with a Maori woman! It was one of the highlights of my trip.”
