Angus Affleck announces candidacy

Dear friends and neighbours,

I am writing you all to announce that I will be running for council in the upcoming fall election.

I grew up in Mississippi Mills, but like many people, I spent time away before returning home to be closer to family. My wife, Nicki did not grow up here, which has given us both a fresh appreciation for what makes this community special. Together, we chose to build our life here, and we’re proud to be raising our family in Almonte.  We care deeply about the future of our town.

If you have lived here long enough, you know as well as I do what makes this place unique. We are a caring and connected community that has long lived up to the moniker of “The Friendly Town.” My wife and I often remark: how could so many wonderful people live in one place? From the ice cream shop to the hardware store, there are friendly faces around every corner.

At the same time, those of us who have been here long enough have also seen significant change and know there is more on the horizon. I understand the apprehension that can bring and that is why I will be running for council in October.

I have spent much of my professional life working in community development, town planning, and building. Much of my work on municipal projects has focused on these issues of managing change. Through that work, I have seen how local decisions shape everyday life from housing affordability and infrastructure to community cohesion, public spaces, and the strength of local economies.

I think we all know that we have something special here, and I would like to do my part to help preserve and strengthen it for future generations.

Over the coming months, I’ll have more to share but most importantly, I know that no one person has all the answers, and I believe the best ideas will come from listening to the people who call Almonte home.

This is a community effort, and I welcome people who want to be part of it. If you would like to get involved in the campaign, I would be pleased to hear from you. Feel free to email me at angus4almonte@gmail.com.

I look forward to the conversations ahead.

Sincerely,

Angus
