ADHS students take pride in their school and community.

by Edith Cody-Rice

Almonte District High School students were praised by the judges of the Communities in Bloom program, who visited Mississippi Mills last week. In their evaluation on July 29, they mentioned the floral display at the high school in school colours as well as the creative approach to the garbage cans as being a very rare thing to see.  In the ADHS submission to the Communities in Bloom program, principal Laurie McCabe wrote:

The high school is very active in the community and supports many initiatives through thousands of hours of volunteering and community service. The Lifeskill’s class, Grade 12 Geography class and students from the Drama class, spearheaded by students, Caitlin Langlois, Corrissa Penney and Kendra Bouchard, and Office Administrator, Ms Peggy Gravelle, have worked extremely hard to make our school and community a better place. As a school, we have spent the last four years focusing on tidiness by repainting the school internally, and one outside shed, in our school colours to increase school spirit and reduce vandalism. We have had incredible success in this endeavour and although we are still a work in progress, significant gains have been made so we are now turning our efforts to the outside of the building, specifically the landscape. Last year we did an extreme makeover on our sports field and this year we concentrated our efforts on the gardens in front of the school, trying to maintain the orange, black and white school colour theme to create interesting floral displays. To address the garbage issue at the school and down Martin Street, the students, along with teacher and photographer extraordinaire, Mr. Dan Hickey, created “photo garbage cans” in school colours, accented with flower baskets, to promote environmental stewardship in the community and the school. It’s a pleasure for our school to be part of the Town Beautification Committee and a great opportunity for our staff and students to be part of the Communities in Bloom project.

Thus, Almonte District high school students met five of the eight criteria for the Communities in Bloom project and clearly impressed the judges. The students and teachers deserve the praise of the community for their efforts.
