Early accounts say that there are at least two St Valentines: Valentinius of Rome, a 3rd century temple priest beheaded by Emperor Claudius II for helping couples to wed; another was the Bishop of Terni, also martyred by Claudius. Today there are about a dozen recognized St Valentines. One was even a pope for 40 days.
- February 21, 1916, was the beginning of the Battle of Verdun between the Germans and the French, destined to last until December 18th of that same year. The French won. Recent estimates put the total number of casualties at 976,000. It became one of the longest and costliest battles in human history.
- The outer skin of the nutmeg is the spice ‘mace’.
- Sergei Diaghelev founded the Ballets Russes in 1909.
- The building specially equipped for milking cows is the ‘milking parlour’.
