SportsBicycle racing returns to Almonte -- November 20

Bicycle racing returns to Almonte — November 20

Sunday morning, Nov 20, sees the annual return of the Eastern Ontario Cyclocross Race Series to Gemmill Park in Almonte.

The Series has been coming to Almonte for nearly 20 years now and is the favourite of all of our race courses in Eastern Ontario.

Cyclocross is a bicycle race held in parks over the grass with a few barriers added in where riders have to get off their bikes and carry them over the barriers and then re-mount their bike. Often the course will have riders going up slopes and through sand and mud. It is a very popular sport in Europe, drawing thousand of spectators at elite events.

Our Eastern Ontario Cyclocross Race Series is the largest in Canada, with 10 races from the end of September until the beginning of December in places like Perth, Cornwall, Kingston, Cobden, Morrisburg, North Gower and Renfrew. We race through all weather conditions, even snow as long as it is not too deep.

Expect to see over 250 riders ranging in age from 4 to 75. The women riders have their own race and we anticipate nearly 50 girls and women out riding. Our kids’ race has blossomed in the last few years and we’ll have around 30 riders under the age of 13 riding.

Races start at 9 a.m. with the Master Men age 40 and up. The kids will race at 10:15, the women will start around 11:05 and the elite racers will start around 12:15 pm.

The length of the race varies by category and will be from 20 minutes for the youngest to 60 minutes for the elite men. Local racers from the Almonte Bicycle Club and Carleton Place Slow Spokes will be participating. The leader of the Junior men’s category (ages 17 to 19) is our own John Stuart from Appleton.

Come on out and see some great bicycle racing, we would love to have lots of spectators.
