Check out the windows at Pakenham General Store

EDITOR’S NOTE: Margie Argue sent us this nice note and accompanying photos.

For the romantics and historians among you, and those who are neither but need an excuse to take a drive to explore more of Mississippi Mills, a drive to Pakenham is highly recommended this week.

The main reason in the dead of winter is to view the impressive window display at the Pakenham General Store. Year-round the three large windows are wonderfully decorated: the Christmas scenes were enchanting, then the winter landscapes were delightful, soon we will look forward to the spring theme. Whether Hallowe’en, Remembrance Day, Easter, etc, no holiday or season is ignored.

The result of the effort involved puts one to mind of old fashioned window displays, when general stores played such a vital role in the life of small towns and villages. Currently you must see the display for St. Valentines Day. Old photos of couples over the decades add a nostalgic air to Pakenham’s streetscape.

So the next time you are dropping in for those famous sticky buns, do take a closer look outside.
