Municipal Election 2018David Hinks: What are you thankful for?

David Hinks: What are you thankful for?

It has been a heck of a ride so far! My headfirst dive into local politics has meant I’ve moved considerably outside my usual comfort zone and it’s been an amazingly positive and rewarding experience.

I’m gobsmacked, beyond belief, at the commitment of my team who put in endless hours and appear to be enjoying it! I’m overwhelmed at the many, many enthusiastic responses I get as I go door-to-door from fellow citizens who agree that polarization and divisiveness is not part of the community that we love.

I’m also overwhelmed at the engagement of new and long-time residents who are taking the time to look at platforms and are making reasoned choices – I’m thankful that democracy is alive and well in Mississippi Mills.

At this time of year my thoughts also turn to those in our community who may be struggling to make ends meet – our neighbours who face difficult choices of paying the hydro bill or buying food. I’m thankful for all of those in the community who are helping to make a difference. To all those that volunteer and work at our Lanark County Food Bank, to those that donate money and food, and to those who share their produce to replenish the shelves with fresh local seasonal produce. I’m proud to volunteer beside you in this endeavour. The contributions of all these generous gardeners will be honoured in a brief program this Saturday at the Friendship Oven in Almonte.

Again, thanks to all supporters and endorsers – you’re with me on the campaign trail every day! Our shared community is worth fighting for – let me do so on your behalf as your Deputy Mayor.

I look forward to meeting you and hearing your concerns – Mississippi Mills is all of us.

Happy Thanksgiving.
