Family history research: Getting started

The Centre for Creative Living is pleased to be able to offer a six-week workshop series on genealogy research.  This is a pilot project supported by a community grant from Mississippi Mills to see how much interest there would be in establishing a group focused on people’s family history.

The course will be taught by June Corfiel,d who has been researching her family in England, Ireland, U.S. and Canada for over 30 years. Before online genealogy, June volunteered at the LDS Family History Library in Toronto, providing research direction, and assisting with ordering and returning family history-related films from Salt Lake City in the U.S.

She is a member of the Ontario Genealogy Society (OGS), and their Special Interest Groups (Ireland and Advanced Genetic Genealogy).  Until her move to this area, she volunteered  as the OGS researcher for Ontario Archives, assisting members and non-members with queries.

The course will be limited to ten people and will include the following:

  1. Setting genealogy research goals and strategy
  2. Interview, gather and document information from living relatives
  3. Review & determine desktop application or online family tree websites, storage options, file naming conventions, and backup options
  4. Utilize existing pedigree charts, family group charts, research logs, source citations forms or create and use your own
  5. Useful tips/trick when searching databases
  6. Pros and cons of most popular genealogy websites
  7. Website previews: Ancestry, My Heritage, FindmyPast, FamilySearch
  8. Options for sharing your research results

When:  Thursday April 17th to May 22nd, 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m.
