For the Birds: Beautiful Herons

Good Monday!

I had a pretty quiet week this past week in birding.  However, I did take a day to head to Mud Lake.  I heard that there was a Green Heron making an appearance there on a regular basis.

The Green Heron is a pretty small heron.  Most people know about the Great Blue Heron. They are very large!  I am always surprised when I spot a Green Heron as they are not much bigger than a large crow.

So I went to Mud Lake, and did the tour I normally do, finding myself disappointed as I didn’t see a Green Heron.  I was heading back to the beginning of the trail and I spotted, through the trees, a Green Heron hunting on the water.  I tucked into the trees, and tried to find a good view to snap some photos of this beautiful hunter.  It was a beautiful sunny day, so the sun really brought out the colours on him.  You can see why it is named the Green Heron.

On the way to my car, with my camera filled with Green Heron shots, I spotted a Black-crowned Night Heron resting in a tree.  It is quite a beautiful bird as well.  They are very interesting in appearance with their big red eyes.

Please enjoy my heron shots below…as well as a few others from that same day.

Have a super week of Feathers, Wings & Beaks!
