Gardening in Almonte: Gardens, Canteen & Pizza Oven

David

I dropped into the Mississippi Mills Youth Centre (MMYC) to check on the garden yesterday and was delighted with what I saw. In the heat sink in front of the MMYC (full sun plus asphalt) on Main Street, heat loving plants such as beans and tomatoes are exhibiting explosive growth. Loving care by staff and youth promise a bountiful harvest.

Inside, there was frenetic activity as planning for a couple of foodie-related events this coming weekend reaches fever-pitch.

On Saturday June 16, the MMYC celebrates the opening of their Canteen, which is a youth run social enterprise, located in Gemmill Park. Join them anytime between noon and 7:30 pm in Gemmill Park. Saturday will be a big day in the park as the town celebrates the official opening of the new splash pad at noon. There will be a barbeque and the canteen will be open selling goodies.

And on Sunday June 17, there will be a Grand Opening of the Neighbourhood Tomato Community Gardens “Friendship Oven” at noon in front of the Almonte Library. There will be a ribbon cutting and wood-fired pizza. This event is a fundraiser for the MMYC. Personal pizzas will be for sale with proceeds going to the centre. The MMYC is making sauce this week and preparing toppings.
