George Stewart — obituary

Stewart, Lloyd George

It is with great sadness that we announce George’s unexpected passing on June 13, 2026. He died peacefully with Cynthia by his side holding his hand.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Cynthia Agnes (nee Burke), his brother David (Bev) of Nanaimo BC, and was a loving father to Sharon Philbrick (Michael) of Cayman Islands, Jennifer Stewart (Sylvio Deluca) of Etobicoke Ontario, and Michael (Julie nee Loader) of Almonte Ontario. He was also a proud and very loving Grandfather to Mackenzie and Meagan Philbrick, Benjamin, Jacob and Madeline Deluca, and Matthew and Sophie Stewart.

George was predeceased by his parents Lloyd Osborne and Charlotte (Lottie) Ann (nee Bole), his youngest brother Donald Murray, and his grandson Benjamin Michael Deluca.

George went to a one-room schoolhouse SS#3 on the Third Line (Dwyer Hill Road) just down the way from the family farm, before graduating from Arnprior and District High School.

He pursued a long and successful career in the federal Government of Canada, starting at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans before moving to External Affairs (now Global Affairs Canada), serving and representing Canada at the High Commission in Kingston, Jamaica (1965-1968, where he met his wife), and then at Canada House in London, England (1968-1971), before returning to the Ottawa area at External Affairs HQ.

George retired in 1996 and pursued his passion of family history and genealogy, volunteering at the Lanark County Genealogical Society, and authoring books on family history and rural schools in Pakenham Township.

George was also the church organist and Choir Director at the Almonte Presbyterian Church and served on Session as an Elder.

Above all, George was devoted to his family and had a profound love for family gatherings, music, travel, gardening, and reading.

George will be greatly missed by the extended Stewart family cousins, sister-in-law, nephew, niece, friends, and former neighbours in Almonte. His warmth, kindness, gentle humour and infectious smile will always be remembered.

We would like to thank Dr Ray, Lisa, Meg, Sam, Julie and all of the caring staff at Orchardview that supported him over the last years.

Rest in Peace Dad. Our love for you will live forever.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Society or the Almonte General Hospital Fairview Manor Foundation.
