As mayor, I sit on the Community Policing Advisory Committee. The committee meets quarterly with the head of the OPP Lanark detachment to discuss police activity and effectiveness. Last meeting, we reviewed statistics that show a continuing reduction in most violent crime categories in Lanark County, as the following charts show.
Traffic offences involving liquor are also down: police laid 13 charges in 2016 compared to 19 in 2015. The stats for property crime—e.g. break & enter, theft under $5000—rose 5.7%.
The calls for service in matching categories in Mississippi Mills show the same downward trend in major crimes.
