Have you seen the chessboard/checkerboard on the Riverwalk behind the Post Office parking lot, beside the Barley Mow Pub?

09-05-16-chess-board-2 The board stones are inlaid in the ground. The board has been there since the early 1900’s when the Penman Mill, then the Hartley Company, and finally, the Collie Mill occupied the space now taken by the new Post Office and its parking lot.

As all chessboards/checkerboards, it measures 8 squares by 8 squares, for a total of 64 squares.  Each square is 12 inches by 12 inches.  Total board size is 96 inches square [8 feet by 8 feet].  In metric, the total board size is 2.44 metres by 2.44 metres.

QUESTION IS—who installed the board, and when, and why?
