Editor’s Note: Tony Sharpe sent these photos of pancake ice he spotted forming in the river. While it doesn’t necessarily have to be extremely cold for such ice to form, I’ve only seen it here in town when the temperatures are bitter. From Tony:

Ice pancakes aren’t that common; they form when slabs of ice break off and get caught in the right sort of eddy so they spin around and bang on the main ice mass. Bits chip off them until they become circular.

They were in the stream that runs off the backwater at the bottom of the Millworkers’ Steps.
