Mill Street Books fall greetings

The rain is pouring – an excellent time to avoid chores and curl up with a good book. I just finished Fangirl – a great coming of age story for teens and young adults who loved Harry Potter.  Terry and I both enjoyed Cuckoo’s Calling – the mystery JK Rowling wrote using a pseudonym.  Her characters are super!

I am not convinced that bestseller lists, book reviews and advertising are proof of a good book.  Orenda by Joseph Boyden is an exception. I think it is terrific. Worth buying in hard cover… and I don’t say that very often.

Broaden your knowledge of Canadian history by learning more about the Patriot War during a book launch this Wednesday October 9th at 6:30pm at the Barley Mow.  Come and congratulate local author Shaun McLaughlin on his 3rd book.

Our book club met recently to discuss Three Weeks in December. I enjoyed reading it twice – it should be on your reading list! Wednesday October 30 we will discuss Tell the Wolves I’m Home – the narrator is wonderful. All welcome, just give me some warning so I have enough chairs.

We have a BIG event planned for Sunday November 3rd at 2pm – Dessert & Discussion with Susan Delacourt, author of Shopping for Votes.  Susan is a senior political writer for the Toronto Star who has covered the nation’s capital for over 20 years. Listen to an excerpt from the Current to learn more about the book.  All you political news junkies will want to be there – so call us soon to buy your ticket.

Introducing Read the Book/Meet the Author which will be held Wednesday November 13 at 7:00 pm. Jan Andrews is a talented author and storyteller. Her book The Silent Summer of  Kyle McGinley is an award winning, compelling read for teens and adults. We like Jan and her book and want to encourage lots of participation. We will discount the book 15% for advance orders and offer prizes and refreshments! Location tbd.

Tickets are now available for the Almonte in Concert Series.  Reserve November 10th for a book launch by local author Jill Moxley about counterfeiting and November 16th  for a signing with local history author Arlene Stafford-Wilson.

Terry and I are going to Ireland from October 15-25 and leaving the store in Debbie’s hands.  Please shop every day and keep an eye on her for us!

We thank you for supporting our store – we’ll tell the leprechauns all about our delightful friends and customers in Almonte!

Sincerely, Mary & Terry
