Naismith students visit the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club

By Maureen Dagg

On June 17, teacher Joe Chalmers brought his grade 6 class of 29 students, a parent volunteer and an EA to visit the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club for a morning of lawn bowling and bocce ball. Eight members of the club volunteered to help and to act as coaches.

As a complete rookie to lawn bowling, I can relate to some of the experience that the students had, and their letter below confirms just how much fun the game of lawn bowling is. Both bocce and lawn bowling are highly adaptable games, making them accessible for folks with many types of special needs, as well as people of all ages.

While both games are relatively simple, lawn bowling involves more technique and practice, but even a beginner can achieve success … consistency comes later with more experience.

While it can be competitive, it certainly doesn’t have to feel that way, and teams have room for all levels of player. The folks here at the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club are kind, patient, helpful and truly FUN.

The experience of this class illustrates that there are games which can keep us active without being purely athletic – there is space in the game to enjoy each other’s company while we play and learn.

“We were so pleased to welcome the Gr. 6 class from Naismith to the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club”, says President Kevin Jones.  “Providing these types of community experiences is an important part of our club’s commitment to supporting the broader community. Throughout the year, we welcome a variety of groups, including schools, municipal summer camps, community organizations, and other local groups. These programs are offered free of charge and are made possible through the dedication of our member volunteers.”

Kids speak for themselves:

We took part in a morning of lawn bowling and bocce on Thursday June 17th. It was amazing! The volunteers were kind, patient, and supportive – which allowed us to learn quickly. It was so neat to learn a couple of new sports. Many of us would like to investigate playing regularly. The challenge and technique involved were a big part of the fun. It was well worth the wait after our first session was postponed due to heavy rain. The staff were so accommodating that we would encourage anyone interested to give it a try. Thanks again to everyone at the Almonte Lawn Bowling Club.” Sincerely,

The Grade 6 students at Naismith M.P.S.
