Past efforts to build a hydro electric generating plant at Blakeney ended in failure

Blakney rapidsIn 1986 in Blakeney, a private concern tried to build a small dam to generate hydro electricity. There was quite a different approach from government towards this proposed dam than the approach of the current government agenices toward the Enerdu project. The community argued it would damage a rare species of fish and spoil the recreational character of the Blakeney falls site. The dam was not built. See the article in the Ottawa Citizen here. Our thanks to reader Jayne Munro for pointing out this article.

Almonte resident Al Seaman investigated this subject in the online editions of the Almonte Gazette which are available on the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum website. Here are articles from the Gazette on the Blakeney power dam.
