Recycling organic garbage

Hello all,

I need some input.

There is a proposal before Council to begin picking up and recycling organic garbage separately. These include food-related garbage and paper not currently recyclable.

My green instincts don’t like the feel of this.

Right now, trucks zip all over the town, pick up this stuff, take it to a dump, where heavy machinery compacts it. End of story.

If picked up separately, trucks would zip all over the town, pick up this stuff, take it to a composting depot, where heavy machinery would form it into windrows and turn it until done. Then other trucks would pick it up and take it to an unknown destination.

Where is the environment served in this scenario? Waste diversion should have a goal that is more than just meeting a diversion percentage.

I also worry that people will home-compost less under this plan.

Those are my thoughts. Anyone got info to prove organic recycling has a net environmental benefit?

Thanks

Shaun McLaughlin
