Rights of passage and small town values in 2015

As parents we launch our children into adulthood with values based on what they have learned from family, community and the education system.

This week our 18 year old daughter, who will be graduating from ADHS this month, shared with us an awards list that a group of her high school peers have proposed to celebrate at their graduation dinner. On the positive side, the list offers an` excellent opportunity for students to consider and identify their core values and beliefs. On a more worrisome side, the list reflects acceptance and celebration of materialism, objectification, misogyny, homophobia, and bullying.

The list gives us all food for thought. How do we, our community and the school system form our youth? What are the characteristics and values that we celebrate in one another? How do we want to be remembered?
