The Niquab Issue – Showing Face in a Democracy

Dear Editor:

Prime Minister Harper wants to force some women to show their faces in Citizenship ceremonies, but at political meetings and national leaders’ debates he is unwilling to show his face or let his candidates show theirs.

In my mind, one criteria of a democratic vote is that candidates meet face to face with potential voters so they can make up their own minds as to who will best represent them. Any circumventing of that criteria undermines Canadian democracy and values.

I find the Prime Minister’s behaviour offensive, two-faced and undemocratic.
