ADHS takes gold at Ontario curling championship

Almonte and District High School won gold Saturday at the OFSAA Boys’ Curling Championship in North Bay.

The Thunderbolts overcame Toronto’s Ridgeview Collegiate Institute 8-5 to take the title at the Granite Curling Club in North Bay.

This was the second straight year the ADHS team qualified for OFSAA. After ADHS missed the medal rounds in 2016, skip Derek Bowden, third Allyn Wark, second Jack McBride, lead Karlan Schenher, and lead Madison Horton came home this year with gold medals and the championship banner.

Bowden said sheer determination sealed the championship for the Thunderbolts.

“Coming in as the 8th seed in the playoffs – and they were number three – we just proved that we wanted it more so we played better,” explained Bowden of reasons for the victory. “Just having that mindset that we were the underdogs and nobody really expected us to win helped us improve our game.”

“I can’t even explain how it feels. It’s just awesome.”
