Almonte General Hospital Birthing Unit a runaway winner

More than 235 runners, walkers and supporters helped make the 2nd annual Mississippi Mills River Run in support of AGH’s birthing unit (ranked #1 in Ontario for patient satisfaction) a run-away success.

Although pledges are still coming in, approximately $20,000 was raised through the event which saw runners and walkers of all ages complete a 3, 5 or 10 km course which originated and ended at the Almonte Fair Grounds.

Aegle Events, a Wakefield based company specializing in charity runs, handled all the logistics.  AGH-FVM Foundation board member Karen Smith headed up the fundraiser again this year but took time out in early September to have her second child, Isabelle, at the Hospital.

“We are so thankful for all the participants, companies, volunteers and of course donors that made our second year another success,” said Smith.  “Funds raised from this event helps the Hospital buy new equipment like IV pumps for the birth unit.  The staff there is amazing so we need to ensure they have the best tools.”

Participants came from throughout the region and included teams from the Ottawa Valley Family Health Team, Almonte Chiropractic Centre and the Rehab program at the Hospital.  Patrice’s Independent, Carleton Ford, and Almonte Shopper’s Drug Mart helped underwrite the costs of staging the event so that all funds pledged support the Hospital.

Winners in the three distances were:

3 km – Caelan McBain (Male) 15:27 and Guilia Falco (Female) 16:48

5 km – Eric Bauman (Male) 18:14 and Megan Bertrand (Female) 26:04

10 km – Kyle Mierzwa (Male) 39:56 and Anneke Kosse (Female) 47:43

Anyone wishing to support the event can still donate online at: www.almontehospitalfoundation.com
