As a former resident of Carleton Place, and a former colleague of Val Sears at the Toronto Star, I am delighted by the reappearance of the Sears byline, and by the Millstone itself, a wonderful initiative to cover the news that should really matter to people today — what's going on in our home town.
Too many smaller communities in Ontario have seen their newspapers fall under the Sun Media umbrella, which is a formula for making money and usually means your news is covered by someone from afar and presented in pre-packaged form, with miserable space for local letters and generic editorials and columnists who seldom address local issues.
We need more Millstones. May you prosper for a long time.
