People’s careless attitude is surprising frankly. I find this behavior unacceptable! There is no excuse for this.
I live on March Road just outside of Almonte. This past spring I collected two oversized wheelbarrow loads of garbage from the front of our property and our frontage is only about 250 feet. Since then, I have collected several shopping bags full of miscellaneous items tossed from vehicles along the side of the road.
I will accept that some of these items may have blown from recycle bins and overflowing garbage bins in the area, but I don’t believe that comprises the majority of the refuse I see and have collected.
I also walk along March Road with my dog on a regular basis and I am appalled at the amount of garbage and larger items dumped along the roadside, as well as other roads in Almonte that I frequently walk.
I also know that the Civitan had volunteers pick up garbage along the roadsides of Almonte in the spring and I saw dozens of garbage bags picked up by their truck. Along with large items such as pallets, etc.
My biggest concern right now is the large number of tossed cigarette butts I have found along the road side, and this is why I am writing to you today.
I would like to ask that people discontinue this habit. With the lack of rain this summer, the incredibly dry conditions in our region means that the grasses along the roadside are so dry that even the hardiest weeds are beginning to curl up and die. The roadside still appears green, but underneath the barely thriving weeds are grasses and other plants susceptible to sparking fires with the weakest of source.
Since our home is so close to the road, we have a vested interest in eliminating the potential for such fires, so we spend time weeding and cutting to eliminate some of the risk where we can. We also take great pride in our property and truly love living in this wonderful community.
So PLEASE – Do NOT throw your cigarettes out along the roadside – PLEASE!! And please remember that every roadside property is owned by someone and your lack of consideration is not appreciated.
Sincerely,
—
