2025 Millstone Goose Lottery Winners

Reflections from the Swamp
Richard van Duyvendyk

Dear Readers

After much anticipation, six geese landed on Corkery Pond on April 5th at 9.30 am.

The geese walked around on the pond ice for about 20 minutes before deciding to fly further north to find the promised land. The geese looked familiar, but all the geese looked familiar. I wonder if all people look identical to geese, but I digress.

This year’s lottery winner is Nick Fran of Martin Street, Almonte. Although Nick keenly understands nature, he chose April 5th in the morning because it was his birthday. Nick often e-bikes between Blakely, Almonte, and Carleton Place and is happy with his win.

Second place goes to Nora Killeen of Peter Robinson Rd. Nora has the advantage of seeing the geese flying in the area but can’t see Corkery Pond. Hundreds of geese, some swans, and seagulls land in Killeen’s flooded field long before they land on Corkery Pond. Nora also chose April 5th after Nick chose April 5th morning, so I placed her in the afternoon.

Third place goes to John Peters of Almonte. John chose April 4th. John is well known for his carving and involvement with the Men’s Shed.

Now that spring has officially arrived in Corkery; we are trying to convince Coady Creek to return to her banks and end the flood of our driveways and fields.

Thanks to all who participated(85 people) in this year’s Goose Lottery. May the geese land in your favour next year.
