‘Zombie processes’ bring down Millstone briefly

by Brent Eades

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

A scene from “Shaun of the Dead”, which appropriately enough I first saw in London.

I got home from a busy day at work in the city to see messages from readers that the Millstone was down.

After a couple of long phone conversations with our hosting company, I discovered the issue was “zombie processes consuming system resources” — and given I work in the Web world, I actually understood what that meant. It’s technical jargon for computer processes that “can’t be killed.”

We’ve sent the zombies back to wherever they came from, for the time being. We’re also working on moving the Millstone to a new and (we hope) zombie-free hosting company in the next little while.

News postings for tonight have been delayed a little thanks to the zombie apocalypse.
